Frequently asked questions

A good landscape design will save you money. Paul will create a design unique to your property. The plants will be placed where they will look good and grow well. All too often people will attempt this on their own, only to have plants die or grow too big or too small for their space.

The best time to begin is BEFORE the season starts. As long as there is no snow on the ground, you can begin planning your project so that you are ready to begin once spring arrives. Paul is available all year round for consulting and designing services.

Paul wants you to enjoy your yard and to think of it as an extension of your home. A good place to start is to set a budget of 5% to 10% of the value of your home. Keep in mind that your project can be done in stages over time.

A general rule to follow is to prune spring-flowering shrubs and trees in the summer, and prune summer-flowering shrubs and trees in the spring. Fast growing plants need to be pruned down more than slower growing ones. Paul uses his hedge trimmer when pruning larger shrubs or a large number at one time. He has extensive knowledge on the pruning methods required for different types of plants.

Paul uses good quality mulch in all of his landscaping projects. He prefers natural, partially composted, shredded bark mulch. Mulch retains moisture needed by the plants as well as making the weeds easier to pull, as they will root in the loose mulch as opposed to the compact soil. It also looks aesthetically pleasing.

Once Paul has provided you with a professional design, you may proceed to do the work yourself, or you could consider hiring a professional. Paul will also provide you with an estimate of what it would cost for MacPhee’s Landscaping Services to install the design. Choosing MacPhee’s Landscaping to install your design will ensure that everything is placed properly and installed professionally.

Paul will make sure to design your yard to suit your lifestyle. There is no point in having an elaborate project if you have very little time to maintain it as it should be. Paul takes many things into consideration when developing a design, such as how much time you will be able to spend on maintenance, your physical ability to do the maintenance, and whether or not you have children or pets playing in your yard. You also have the option of having your yard professionally maintained by MacPhee’s Landscaping Services.

Paul is able to come to your property for a professional consultation whether or not a full scale design is necessary. A consultation lasts about 2 hours and costs $297.00. During your meeting with Paul you will be able to discuss plant choices, bed installation and placement, proper methods of creating garden beds, walkway shape and style (e.g. brick or crushed stone), and anything else you may wish to discuss about your project.

MacPhee’s Landscaping Services has extensive experience in installing brick walls and walkways. We have the right tools for the job and the knowledge to provide you with a professional installation.

MacPhee’s Landscaping Services provides spring and fall clean-ups. We do not currently offer ongoing property maintenance.

At MacPhee’s Landscaping Services we use a variety of methods to remove grass to create a garden bed. For very large areas we use a skid-steer machine. Small areas in tight quarters require the use of shovels. For moderate size areas where the ground is smooth we use a manual sod-cutter. This tool will lift the sod up in manageable sizes without damaging the grass and with just the right amount of soil under the roots, making it perfect for transplanting.
